Gabby Union Covers Essence...Again

Gabrielle Union is covering the September issue of Essence. Again.

Seriously, I love Essence and I like Gabby, but somebody's got to do better. This is her second time on the cover of Essence in just over a year!

Either Essence needs to start utilizing Black models for covers (like magazines used to do in the old days) or Gabrielle needs to start turning Essence down.

If Essence insists on using celebs, as is the trend in magazines today, surely there are some other notable Black celebs that can be shot for the cover. How about Paula Patton? Or Solange Knowles? Or Chanel Iman? Or any of the other up and coming Black actresses, models and entertainers?

I understand that publishers need celebs to sell more magazines, but you can't tell me that Gabby is selling that many magazines. I don't know, maybe it's just me. I just think that Essence has made such major strides to become a more modern, complete publication that can compete with its mainstream counterparts, but still uses the same 'ole faces.

Tell me, does this annoy you too? What should Essence do about its covers?

I totally agree, my friend and i were just talking about Gabrielle, Nia and Sanaa before i saw this cover . Essence also likes Mary J Blige alot and Beyonce. For the past few years ive been discussing with my friends the lack of or non existant models on covers, its been over 10 years since magazines were using models on the cover. I am tired of the same women on essence, they could have put MJ on this cover sheesh! and put Gabrielle on the inside flap if it was too late to remove her, They do put men on the cover every once in a while. Tracey Ellis Ross could be on the cover, I forgot the singer who sings American boy but put her on the cover or Chrisette Michelle,Janet, Garcelle,Alek Weks never been on the cover.

Good point about MJ. I was a tad surprised he wasn't on the cover since everyone is doing memorial issues.

Tracey Ellis Ross would be a FAB person to put on the cover! She's super talented and has great style. A true cover girl.

I do believe Alec Wek was on the cover once several years ago. It was a FIERCE photo. It was so fierce, I'm surprised they haven't had her back! Sigh.

Thanks for commenting. Glad to know someone else feels the same way!

I too am annoyed that we haven't seen more models on the cover of essence. Essence magazine covers are a way of giving our unknown or unrecognized black models a chance. It is a shame that MJ was not on the cover of the latest edition. I am so tired of seeing the same celebs. I have been an essence subscriber for years and years and lately have been disappointed. I don't want to give up on essense but they are not making it easy.

I too would love to see some of beautiful models on the cover of Essence. Or at least more editorials featuring them.

They've made great changes to the content, maybe we'll see some changes to the cover as well.
