Pick My New Hairstyle!

Ok, so my natural hair journey will be ending tomorrow and I'm in the market for a new 'do. I've got about 4 months of growth so I'm looking for a short and sexy style (my favorite!).

I decided to peruse the pics over at Essence.com and I found a few that I'm really feeling. Then I thought, "Why not have my readers help me decide?!"So, take a look at the pics below and let me know which hairstyle you like the best!

Halle Berry with softly-spiked, finger-styled hair.

Nia Long with a classic and super sleek, close-cropped style.

Eva Marcille with short, tousled waves.

What's it gonna be? Halle, Nia or Eva? Let me know in the comments below and I'll show what I picked Monday!

Beautiful Reading: Color Stories

Hey beauty babes! I've been reading the most fascinating beauty-related book and I wanted to share it with all of you!

I just finished reading Color Stories: Behind the Scenes of America's Billion-Dollar Beauty Industry, $15. If you've ever wanted to know how your fave beauty products make it to department store counters, or if magazines really use the makeup they claim to use on covers (hint: they don't!), check this book out. It a super entertaining read that any beauty junkie worth her lip gloss should read!

Happy Reading!

Fab or Drab: Michelle Obama Debuts A New 'Do

For months fashion and beauty insiders have been lamenting about how they wish the First Lady would experiment more with her hair. Last week they finally got their wish.

Mrs. O debuted a shorter style at a White House Reception for country music artists. But don't be fooled. The First Lady didn't take a pair of scissors to those glamorous locks. Instead, her hairstylist Johnny Wright gave her a "tuck up". Wright dished on the hairstyle to Urban Beauty Collective:

"There are two things I do. The up-tuck, like you are tucking something in. Then I do a tuck-up. The up-tuck is when I position a small ponytail somewhere on the head, and then . . . a tuck-up is when I take the hair and gather it all in the back and I twist it and I pull up and tuck."

He said he told the first lady "that this would be a nice length for her whenever we decide to cut it, and she said yeah. So now, whenever we do cut it, I'll probably go shorter now because everyone thinks that's the cut!"

Sounds like the First Lady may be in the market for a short, sassy cut soon!

So, what do we think? Is it Fab or Drab?

The Bombshell Files: Felicia of ThisThat Beauty

Hey Beauty Babes! I've started a new feature here on Brown Bombshell Beauty where I'll be featuring some of my favorite beauty insiders. Our first installment of The Bombshell Files is with beauty blogger Felicia of ThisThat Beauty. ThisThat Beauty is one of my favorite beauty blogs, and Felicia's sassy style keeps readers in the know! Check out my interview with her below to learn more about this makeup maven!

When and why did you decide to start ThisThatBeauty?

That’s a great question. I have to tell you, the idea lived in my head for many moons. Even as a pre-teen I had an insatiable appetite for beauty. Most kids spend their allowance on toys, games, etc. I spent my weekly allowance at the beauty supply store…from VO5 hot oil treatments to Lee Press On Nails, I experimented with some of EVERYTHING. My passion for beauty is relentless. Prior to starting ThisThatBeauty, I had spent untold hours emailing and advising friends/family members on skincare and beauty products. Entering the blogosphere in April 2008 felt as natural as breathing. Ahhh!

Is there any significance in the name ThisThatBeauty?

But of course! The name ThisThatBeauty hits the nail on the head…on my site we chat about a little This, a little That, and it all revolves around my obsession with all things Beauty. Believe it or not, it didn’t take long to come up with a name for my site. As soon as I put pen paper to start blogging, “ThisThatBeauty” just organically came to me. Don’t you love her?☺

Indeed I do! What has been your most memorable experience as a beauty blogger?

Oh boy, where’s a gal to start? I have been EXTREMELY blessed to share in so many great experiences as MsThisThatBeauty. First and foremost, I have connected with some of the most amazing people in the world, my readers. They’re all so near and dear to my heart, you have no idea. As Founder and Editor in Chief for TTB, I’ve had the opportunity to speak at industry events as a beauty authority…yea, lil ol me! Through my relationships in the industry I have appeared on national television (The Today Show with Emmy Award winning makeup artist, Eve Pearl). Earlier this year I met my beauty blogging inspiration, Lianne Farbes AKA TheMakeupGirl. I’ve covered countless product launches and industry events like Fashion Week...I’ve even been invited backstage to cover and meet high fashion icons like Alek Wek. Representing TTB and writing about my passion is extremely fulfilling. It bears repeating, I am truly blessed to be able to do what I do!☺

You have amazing skin! What products are in your regimen?

First of all Amber, thank you so much for the nice compliment. You’re very kind! My regime is uber religious and changes based on weather, environmental conditions, and current state of my skin. …so it’s tough to dish on my specific regime. But I will share a few staples:

1) Leslie Cole is my Skincare Guru. She’s an amazing Aesthetician and Skin Magician (what she does for my skin is pure magic☺). She formulates special treatments and peels designed to address my skincare issues, i.e. hyper pigmentation, extreme oiliness, and adult acne. Lets just say that Leslie has changed my life. She is a monthly staple in my skin care regime. Leslie is a licensed Aesthetician and Spa Director for Time To Unwind Day Spa in Newark, NJ. Her website is www.ttudayspa.com. Call for a consultation, she’s amazing! 973-954-2659

2) Each morning I:

  • Tone with Kiss My Face Antioxidant Toner (Leslie got me stop washing my face every morning. This helps to control my oiliness.)
  • Apply eye cream (right now I’m loving Erno Laszlo Antioxidant Complex for Eyes)
  • Apply an antioxidant serum, I’ve been pretty faithful to Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair for some time now. It says its for night but I use it during the day...and sometimes at night.
  • Apply moisturizer/spf combo. I’m currently using a moisturizer/SPF25 that Leslie whipped up for me.
In the evening I:
  • Wash with a gentle cleanser (currently Kiss My Face Creamy Cleanser),
  • Tone (same product as mentioned in morning routine)
  • Eye cream (same as above)
  • Treat acne with Vitiva Pro Vitamin A15 (This stuff is the TRUTH...available at www.embrolisse.com). From there I might use a night cream or my Estee Lauder Serum mentioned above.

What’s in your makeup bag right now?

Awww damn, why’d you have to go and ask that question?. You’re going to freak out when you see what’s inside. Ok, here goes. Please don’t judge me. LOL!

In no particular order:

OMG, I'm dying of envy! What is your favorite indulgent or crazy-expensive beauty product?

As of right now, my two most indulgent beauty products are Vitivia Pro Vitamin A15 (its about $60 for a 28 day supply) and MD Grossman Glycolic Peels (about $60 for a 30 day supply). I’ve worked very hard to try and scale down on my pricey products. But I’ve paid as much as $100 for an eye cream. I currently have a serum that was sent to me from a PR rep. The serum has gold in it and costs $185 per ounce!

What beauty trends do you see shaping up for fall?

I love the matte nail color trend we’re seeing. OPI and Essie have great fall lines. The same is true for China Glaze. I love these brands. Other then the matte nail color trend, you see a return of classic fall shades, rich berry tones, deep texture, plums, purples, and greys. Given the recession, we will also see “less is more” represented in collections. I think there will be a return to a certain level of modesty and less over the top extravagance. I think folks are like, “enough already”! I think people want to see elegance and glamour, but in a manner that is approachable and in line with the current state of the world. With layoff being the new black, people aren’t so much feeling the idea of dropping ridic dollars on stuff that’s here today and gone tomorrow. I personally find it hard to spend as willy nilly as I used to just because something is haute and new. I’m now starting to dig in the crates to see what I currently own and how it can be re-purposed!

I want to send out a big "Thank You" to Felicia for this fabulous interview! Check her out at ThisThat Beauty!

Beauty Q&A: Uneven Skin Tone

Question markQ:Hey,
My problem is I have very uneven skin.My t-zone is light but everything else is dark around my mouth eyes and hair line. So I wanted to know what was the best skin regimen to tone and even out my skin. My biggest issue is that my top lip is significantly darker than my bottom lip so I find it hard to wear colored lips. Help!

-Shoshana

A:
Hey Shoshana,

It sounds like you've got an issue with "uneven" skin tone that is very common among women of color.

As I mentioned, most women of color are more than one shade on their faces, especially on the other edges of their face and around their mouth and chin. This isn't necessarily uneven skin tone, as the variation can be very minimal. If yours is more noticeable or is really bothering you, there are some skin care products you can use to even out your skin tone. One line that comes to mind is Dr. Susan Taylor's Rx for Brown Skin. Her Bright and Even Regimen Set, $55 contains glycolic acid and soybean extract to even skin.

You can also use makeup to even out your skin tone, by using two shades of foundation, a trick lots of makeup artists use. A favorite
foundation of mine that would work great for this is Make Up For Ever Invisible Cover HD Foundation, $40. This super light foundation gives a seamless finish, so you can easily blend two colors together, or wear one shade that is closer to your T-Zone and seamlessly blend it out to the edges of your face.

As far as your uneven lip color is concerned, I feel your pain! There really isn't much that can be done to the skin, but you can even it out with make up. I recently came across a genius product from Smashbox that does just that. The Nude Lip Liner, $16 comes in four shades to match any lip color, so that what ever lip gloss or lipstick you apply goes on true! Try it in Dark to match the darker color of your lips, or Medium to match the pinkier shade. Genius, I tell you!

Good Luck!

Beauty Review: Iman Face Kit

I was in Ulta last week (which I strongly advise against. Sephora's service is way better!) and I decided to try Iman Face Kit Palette in St. Tropez, $20. The kit caught my eye because I'm always looking for travel friendly makeup to carry in my bag, and the lush neutrals were pretty and glamorous.

Sadly, this kit was a big disappointment. The color payoff was non-existent. Three of the four shades eye shadow looked the same ashy shade of grey on my eyes, and bronzer was too light while the blush was too orange. Hot. Mess.

I did not expect such poor pigment quality from Iman, as I figured a woman of color with a line of cosmetics for women of color should know better. But hey, what can you do?

On the plus side, the case was sleek and slim, and the large mirror was a nice touch. This makes me wonder how similar her other color products are to the colors in the palettes. Hmm...

Beauty News: No Brows For Fall?

All you pluck-aholics may soon be in fashion! The NY Times Style section published an article today called "Where Have All The Eyebrows Gone?". It's about going eyebrow-less being the hot new trend.

This is just pure foolishness to me, and the explanations of the bare brow-ed in the article are killing me. Check it out here.

Bocia Clear Complexion Kit & Willow Bark Breakout Treatment

I mentioned yesterday that I've been on the hunt for natural skin care, and I think I've found just what I've been looking for in Bosica.

Bosica skin care products are super-natural and preservative free. I've been using their Clear Complexion line for blemish-prone skin and I think I'm in love! Not only is this line super gentle, but it's also super-effective. The key ingredient is Willow Bark Extract, a natural version of Salicylic Acid.

The Clear Complexion Kit, $48 consists of a blemish fighting cleanser, toner, daily blemish serum and a mattifying moisturizer with SPF 15. My only beef is with the moisturizer, as I wish it was SPF 30. Its incredible under makeup though, so I guess I'll let it slide!

While the kit is really awesome, the real star of the line is the Willow Bark Breakout Treatment, $25. This stuff is the business! I got a lovely time-of-the-month pimple on my chin the other day. So, before bed I dabbed some of this on it and it had gone down overnight! Even better, it comes in a cute little to-go size!

Whether you're into natural skin care or not, give Boscia a try if you're in the market for an acne skin care line that won't irritate your skin!

Fab or Drab: Victoria Rowell and Keri Hilson

It's been a while since we've had a Fab or Drab face off, so take a look at the divas below and tell me who was Fab and who was Drab!

Actress Victoria Rowell at her wedding over the weekend. Gorge look for her! I know people say women over 40 should wear long hair, but I think she looks fab!

Keri Hilson heads out of her hotel after midnight in search of some London nightlife

Singer Keri Hilson out and about in London. Cute earrings! The hair? Not so much.

So, were these ladies FAB or DRAB?

Beauty Review: Josie Maran Bear Naked Wipes

I'm on a natural kick lately and have been replacing my skin care products with natural alternatives. Instead of my usual Ponds wipes, I decided to try model Josie Maran's Bear Naked Wipes, $12.

The good thing is that these wipes are bio-degradable, so they don't sit in a trash heap for all eternity. The bad thing is that they don't work so well.

With the exception of eye makeup (these puppies don't stand a chance against eye makeup of any kind), these wipes appear to take off every last bit of makeup with the greatest of ease. Notice how I said they appear to take of makeup?

Well, one night I got the notion to use a little toner afterward, and was stunned at how much makeup was still on my face. I couldn't believe it! How these things manage to take off makeup while not taking off makeup is beyond me. All I know is I won't be buying these again! Next time I'll try Korres wipes before I return to my trusty Ponds. Oh well, at least a portion of the proceeds goes to save polar bears!

Got a fave makeup remover? Let us hear it!

Beauty Review: Ted Gibson Tame It Lotion

Hey Beauty Babes! Since I gave a rundown of my fave styling products for natural hair last week, I decided to share one of fave styling products for my relaxed beauties!

Ted Gibson, deliverer of sexy, tousled celebrity hair, has a fab line of styling products that are available at Tar-jay (aka Target for those not in the know!). The first thing to mention is that the entire line smells like heaven, and his Tame It Lotion, $23 is no exception!

This sweet Merlot scented concoction makes relaxed or blown-out hair uber-shiny without weighing it down. This super-light lotion is very concentrated so you only need a dime sized amount. Plus, the bottle will last you an eternity. Seriously. I've had mine for well over a year, so you'll definitely get your money's worth!

Have you tried any of Ted Gibson's products? Do tell!

I'm a Finalist on Elle!

Hey All!

I'm super excited to tell you my news! Elle magazine, (yes, THE Elle magazine) has launched a website where beauty fanatics like myself compete to be the Elle Video Star of the Week. Well, I just got word that I'm a finalist for this week!

Check me out here showing viewers how to create the perfect red lip. Every time my video is viewed I get one vote, so let's get to watching! I wanna win!

Beauty Review: Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Mascara

I'm 0n a mission to find a new favorite mascara. I'm looking for lashes that are full and plump, with nary a clump in sight. Tall order? Maybe. But Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Mascara, $18 filled most of it.

This mascara turns out super long, glossy black lashes with nary a clump, and the packaging is to die for! Sadly, it doesn't do much in the way of volume (Darn! So close!). If you're in the market for a lash lengthening mascara, run to pick up this fab mascara!

Polish of the Moment: Sephora by OPI in Access 24/7

I am obsessed with nail polish and love to keep up with all the latest, on-trend colors. So, I've decided to share my polish obsession with all of you in a new feature called Polish of the Moment! Once or twice a week I'll feature whatever nail color I'm wearing at the moment so you'll be able to try before you buy, so to speak.

I purchased several OPI by Sephora polishes in hot summer shades, so I'll be featuring those in the coming days. Our first Polish of the Moment color is Sephora by OPI in Access 24/7, $9.

I apologize for the crappy iPhone pic (get it together, Steve Jobs!). Access 24/7 is a creamy hot pink that looks great on brown skin!

What do you think? Are hot pink tips in your future?

Cosmedicine Beauty B.S. Contest

Cosmedicine, they of the amazingly effective skin care (I swear, the Healthy Cleanse for Oily Skin single-handedly wiped out my blackheads last summer), is holding a video contest and the winner gets $5,000! So whip out that camcorder and check out the deets they sent over:

Cosmedicine is PROTESTING the ‘Beauty B.S.’ with a Video Contest!

With so many beauty products out there promising us total transformation and instant gratification, it’s easy to get frustrated when the results barely deliver, as so often happens. Beauty companies are constantly showing us before and after photographs that require either a leap of faith, or a miracle!

It’s natural to get annoyed by the hype that is thrown in our faces day after day. In fact, let’s just say it – IT’S ALL B.S.!

Cosmedicine believes in beauty AND brains. Women are smart and want products that deliver as promised on real claims. That’s why when Cosmedicine talks about its products, it talks about achieving the healthiest skin possible… and when your skin is healthy and beautiful-so are you.

Cosmedicine talks only about results that you can depend on-results that are scientifically and statistically measured in clinical trials… not what some women thought they saw in a mirror.

So, please join us and “Protest the Beauty B.S.”

Cosmedicine has sponsored a video contest for spoofs, satires and parodies of misleading and hard to believe beauty advertisements.

The winner gets a $5,000 cash prize! The top ten finalists get a year’s supply of Cosmedicine products (we promise it will give you beautiful, healthy skin). All eligible entries get a free gift.

Enough is enough! It’s time to put those sneaky beauty ads to shame and score a few points for women of intelligence and those who respect them!

The contest begins August 4th and ends September 21st. For information on how to enter, just go to http://www.cosmedicine.com/catalog/cosmedicine_video_contest.php

Beauty Review: The Big Three

Since I went natural several months ago, I've been experimenting with different hair products to see what will work with my newly curly hair.

Like any other natural newbie, I tried what I call The Big Three. These three cult favorites are considered to be THE products for defining the curls of natural hair. Since I've been using all three for the last several months, I decided to review and compare them for you!

Good: One of the first products I tried was Carol's Daughter Hair Milk, $12. People swear by Carol's Daughter (nobody I know, but I digress...), and Hair Milk is the line's star hair care product. I was also game try Hair Milk because of its reasonable price. Shoot, being natural ain't cheap!

Sadly, the price was one of the more agreeable things about this product. I applied this liquidy lotion to soaking wet hair, and whatever curls I got did not stay for long. Not only that, but it made my hair look ashy if I put on too much. I will say, however, that it smells amazing! I would wear this for the smell alone! Though it's marketed for natural hair, I think it would be an awesome moisturizer for relaxed, wavy or blown-straight hair.

Better: Next, I bought some mini sized jars of several Miss Jessie's products. Though many people have mixed feelings about Miss Jessie's products, I have to say that their Curly Pudding, $7 (travel sized) worked really well on my hair. Now, the curls were not perfect, but there were curls aplenty!

If you're looking to stretch your curls, then this may not be the product for you. It made my curls really, really tight. So, unless your hair is really long, it may not be for you. Also, it can dry a little crunchy. I remedied this by applying some Baby Buttercreme, $9 right after. If you are interested in Miss Jessie's, take advantage of their travel sizes first!

Best:I thought Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding was going to be it for me until I tried Kinky Curly Curling Custard, $29! Curling Custard, unlike the creamy Curly Pudding, is a gel. But don't get it twisted. This is no regular gel! When applied to wet hair, this product consistently gives me lots of springy, coils. No matter if my hair is frizzy and smushed. I just spritz on some water and apply some Curling Custard.

You must be very mindful of how you apply this product. Apply too much in one spot and you will get a gooey clump of gel. It does dry a little crunchy, but I've heard that the Gloss Pomade, $10 can remedy that, so I'll be trying that next.

Already using one of these products. Share your thoughts! If not, give these a try and tell me what you think!

Bombshell Beauty Video: How to Apply Blush 101

Hey Beauty Babes! Lately when I discuss making video tutorials for the site, friends always suggest a make videos that teach the basics. So, at the suggestion of some of my readers, I'll be making video tutorials demonstrating all the basic skills you'll need to create a gorgeous face!

I was planning to start with foundation and work my way up from there, but after seeing this video, I knew I had to start with blush. Watch it and you see why (then watch my response)! So, enjoy our first Bombshell Beauty 101 course in applying blush!

Jin Soon for MAC Fall 2009

MAC is really killing it with their collections lately. This fall they're upping their nail polish game and are releasing a collection of polishes created by nail guru Jin Soon Choi.

Jin Soon's lush nail spa is located in NYC's West Village, and is frequented by celebs and chic Manhattanites alike (Sarah Jessica Parker, anyone?). Jin Soon can also be seen season after season, polishing the tips of models before they strut down the runway at NYC Fashion Week. Needless to say, she's the right woman to create a slick and trendy line of lacquers for MAC.

The collection consists of six shades, and will be released August 27th in the States, and in September internationally. Check it out (I'm all over Dry Martini!)!

Beauty Review: Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Gloss

It's been a long time since I've had this adverse of a reaction to lip gloss (Actually, that's not true. You'll see in an upcoming review). Maybelline's new Color Sensational Lip Gloss was disappointing and gross.

First, the taste. Oh, the taste. It was like pure castor oil! And it wasn't like I was licking my lips or anything, the taste was just too strong to miss!

The texture was also disappointing. It was grainy (thanks to all that darn glitter) and slightly tacky. I mean, it just felt cheap. Not only that, but unless you're wearing one of the bolder colors, the shades I tried looked the same ashy color on my lips!

I would definitely recommend passing on this gloss. There are just too many other lip glosses out there to waste time or money on this. Try again Maybelline!
